The Trinity Cathedral located in the historical centre of the city is the heart of Kaluga. It was built in 1818 under supervision of the gubernian architect Ivan Yasnygin, apprentice of a prominent architect Vasily Bazhenov. The architectural uniqueness of the temple is that its large, round, seventeen metre dome in the Byzantine style was constructed without using internal supports. It is larger than the dome of the well-known Kazan cathedral in St. Petersburg by 2.5 metres.
