The Kalashnikov Museum of Firearms was inaugurated in 2004 to celebrate the 85th anniversary of the great weapon designer. The museum's permanent exhibition shows Kalashnikov's biography, including in the context of the global history of weapons and weapons technology.
The exhibition includes documents from family archive of the Kalashnikovs, personal belongings and decorations, and examples of firearms manufactured in Izhevsk's armories in the last 200 years, from smooth-bore rifles to the Kalashnikov and Nikonov machine guns. The museum also collects materials about Izhevsk armorers and is constantly updating its collection of firearms.
Traditional museum displays are combined with modern practices. For example, the exhibit on Kalashnikov's life features the voice of the armorer himself. He provides personal comments to the narration, reminisces about the past, and even recites verses by his favorite poets.
The museum has an indoor shooting range. Entry to the pneumatic and crossbow shooting range is permitted at 6 years of age, while the firearm shooting range is reserved for people 18 years or older. Temporary exhibitions also take place here. The museum runs educational programs for school children (The City of Armorers) and preschoolers (The Legendary Heroes of Russian Lands).
