National nature reserve “Poronaysky” was organized by Decree of the Council of Ministers of the Russian Soviet Federated Socialist Republic No. 107 dated March 30, 1988, with a purpose of protecting mountain, taiga and marsh ecosystems of Sakhalin Island with a great degree of flora and fauna’s endemism. In addition, the organizers were facing challenges of protecting areas of mass hibernating and transient gatherings of Pacific migrant birds.
The reserve is located on the eastern coast of Sakhalin; it covers over 56 thousand ha and consists of two separate territories — Nevsky and Okhotsky. The larger part of the reserve is covered with coniferous woods where spruces prevail; a great number of rivers and lagoon-type lakes is scattered within the area.
