The Argun Reserve is located in the most picturesque, mountainous, and remote part of the republic. It was founded based on a series of historical and natural monuments of the Chanty-Argun and Sharo-Argun canyons, which are interrelated through their history, ethnicity, and landscape, and they represent unique historical, scientific, and architectural value in combination with their surrounding, unique, natural systems.
This is a historical and geographical site, where many unique Chechen cultural heritage objects are well preserved: grottos, sites, burial-vaults, underground burial grounds, underground and overground, family vaults, military and residential towers and castle complexes. Scientists believe that the chronological range of immovable historical and cultural monuments located in the conservation area covers the period from approximately the second millennium before the common era to the 19th century inclusive. Here you can find almost all types of monuments from the various eras in this region.
The Argun Reserve contains around 600 historical, cultural, archeolgical, architectural, and natural monuments, 170 of which are of federal importance.
Prior to the outbreak of hostilities, tours around the reserve were offered on horseback.
