The Satins, the owners of the manor, were known for their hospitality. It was almost always crowded in the manor. There, Rachmaninoff met with relatives, the Satins, Skalons, Zilottis, Trubnikovs, and friends. Rachmaninoff loved the gardens in Ivanovka, and the fresh air and the aroma of the fields and meadows adjoining the manor.
The lilacs that decorated the gardens in Ivanovka were a point of particular pride. The lilac-colored «balls» (huge lilac garden-beds) were scattered all across the park. Some lilac bushes were planted even between the fruit trees of the gardens.
Rachmaninoff came to Ivanovka get rid of all the stress that life in the capital imposed. He would become more open. Almost everything that Rachmaninoff wrote in the last 17 years of his life passed through Ivanovka. In Ivanovka Rachmaninoff worked on: the symphonic pieces «The Rock,» «The Isle of the Dead,» and «Capriccio Bohémien» from the First and Second Symphonies; the operas «Monna Vanna», «The Miserly Knight,» «Francesca da Rimini,» and «Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom»; the poem «Bells», and the First, Second, Third and Fourth piano and orchestra concertos. In total, Rachmaninoff wrote 24 preludes, 9 etudes-tableaux, 2 sonatas, and 49 romances in Ivanovka.
The manor was destroyed during the Civil War. All 24 buildings and the park in Ivanovka were destroyed.
