Ostankino Tower - is one of the sights of Moscow, and part of one of the tallest towers in the world.
Between Moscow’s city centre and Sheremetyevo Airport, you will find the world’s third tallest single standing building, which reaches an impressive 540 metres above the ground. The Ostankino Tower was built as a tribute to Soviet’s 50th anniversary of the October Revolution in 1963.
When the Ostankino Tower was completed in 1967, it surpassed the Empire State Building in the US. This was, of course, a significant achievement for engineering art within the Soviet Union. However, in 1976, the CN Tower in Toronto exceeded the height of Ostankino. Moreover, in 2010, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, with its impressive 829.8 metres above the ground, then became the tallest building in the world. This, however, does not take away from the magnificence of this Moscow structure as the highest building in Europe. In addition to being a major tourist attraction, the tower is a functioning broadcasting tower that transmits radio and TV signals for millions of households in Moscow.
With its impressive height, this is definitely the ideal lookout point to see Moscow from. Imagine looking out from the top of the tower with a stunning 360-degree view. When you are looking out over the city, you will notice many green areas. Moscow’s total size is 2,511 square kilometres, and a massive 40 per cent of that is area covered by greenery and forests, making it among of the greenest capitals in the world.
