Orel suffered a stunning blow during the Second World War but simultaneously received the honor of being one of the «First Salute» cities (together with Belgorod). Fierce fighting had ensued all the way from Orel to Mtsensk.
The goal of the battle in the direction of Krivtsovo in spring 1942 was to surround and destroy the enemy's formation in Bolokhovo. An offensive operation against the German fascist troops was carried out from March 1942. Many Soviet soldiers died in battle here.
The military memorial was opened in memory of the fallen at an altitude of 186.1 meters on September 16, 1970. The memorial's designers were architect S.I. Fedorov, artist L. I. Kurnakov, and sculptor V. P. Basarev.
