Sverdlovsk regional local-lore museum is among the oldest museums in Russia. It was founded on December 29, 1870, by the Ural society of natural science lovers (UOLE), which was aimed at a comprehensive study of the history and nature of the region. Historical exposition starts with the memorial hall UOLE. Here it is told about history of the Ural society of natural science lovers, about its organizers, as well as on the basis of the company's local history Museum, which became the predecessor of the Sverdlovsk regional local-lore museum.
Exhibition «Ancient history of the peoples of the Urals» covers the period from Palaeolithic times to the sixteenth century, when in the Urals and Transurals came the Russian population.The story about the history of the peoples inhabiting the Urals in prehistoric times, built in chronological order, from the most ancient Paleolithic culture in the Neolithic, the bronze age, early iron age and the middle ages.
Especial pride of the exhibition is Shigirskaya pantry. There is presented one of the most famous archaeological collections of Russia — Shigirskaya collection of pruducts made of wood, bone and horn. The most famous exhibit of the collection is Large Shigorski idol. It was made of whole logs of larch, flipped down the top. His body from all sides are covered with carved geometrical ornament. According to independent expertise,the age Shirgorski idol is 9.5 thousand years. Today, the Big Shigorski idol is the most ancient wooden religious sculpture, known in world history. It is the evidence complex spiritual world of the ancient Urals.
The exposition about the history of the Urals XVI — XIX centuries is divided into two sections. The first one, «On the ways to Siberia», tells us about Russian trailblazers, Ermak, motley span of Irbit fair. The collection presents a genuine money of Ivan the terrible, archaeological findings of the first Russian settlements. The second section of the exhibition «Mining world» tells us the story of the foundation of the first metallurgical plants in the Urals, the founding of Ekaterinburg, the brilliant era of the legendary General Glinka, the first Russian gold, the old believers. Hall of memory of the Romanovs dedicated to the tragic events of 1918 and their reflection in the present time. The exhibition consists of two parts. One is devoted to Nicholas II, his life and reign, marked by violent social upheaval, murdering him and his family in the night of July 17, 1918 in Ekaterinburg. The second part of the exposition is devoted to the investigation into the murder of the royal family and search for their remains.
The local lore Museum, probably is the only one in the country, has a unique materials on investigation of the murder: photos, documents, material monuments, found on the place to look is the king's remains. In the Museum there are sculptural portraits of the persons found in the burial. Final materials of the exposition tell us about the perpetuation of the memory of the Romanovs in Ekaterinburg and the Sverdlovsk region. Sverdlovsk regional history Museum today is a large complex, comprising 6 buildings in Ekaterinburg and 11 in the area. The Museum funds contain more than half a million of original monuments of material and spiritual culture, and the rich collection of the Museum enable you to fully discover the history of the Ural region.
