The «City of stone» natural monument lies on the bank of the Belaya River. It consists of several-meter-high rocks of intricate shapes, formed from frost weathering and streams of rainwater washing the crushed rock away from the slopes.
The soft sedimentary rock here is so eroded by severe temperature and water weathering, that it allows strong winds to mold the shapeless rocks into fanciful statues, monuments, pillars, and arches. You can see a whole city of stone here: vases, dinosaurs, figures of people and animals, chess pieces, and half-demolished buildings. It's all surrounded by glistening piles of white, snow-like sand. The tundra in this area is also quite peculiar — instead of a standard wet swamp covered with moss, dwarf birch, and willow, there is a dry plain with reindeer moss, pebbles, and sand.
The natural monument was created by a decree from February 8, 2011 — the status of a monument is vital to preserve the place, including the local, picturesque landscapes.
