The Furtoug waterfall is part of the Galgut-choch mountain stream that flows nearby the village of Furtoug. The water there falls from cliffs some 12 meters high. In may 1886, Dmitri Mendeleev, the great Russian chemist, visited the place when he led the geological expedition into the Caucasus. He was amazed at the beauty and greatness of the Caucasian landscapes. In his diaries, he noted that considering the richness of natural resources the North Caucasus is in no way inferior to the Altay Mountains and the Urals.
