The largest aviation museum in the world was opened in Ulyanovsk in 1983 at the Ulyanovsk Higher Aviation Academy. It contains over 9,000 various exhibits, including an open-air exhibition of aircrafts.
About 40 domestic aircrafts of different years, including rare exhibits (ANT-4, MI-1, and even the only remaining unique airliner TU-116, designed and constructed at the end of 1950s specially for trans-Atlantic flights of the heads of USSR) are placed throughout the museum's 17.5 hectares.
A «museum inside museum» was opened several years ago on board of one of the most outstanding aircrafts of the collection, the world's first supersonic passenger airliner, the TU-144. Tourists can sit in the pilot's seat and take a break in the cabin of the aircraft, which is tens of years ahead of its time.
