The majestic Sayano–Shushenskaya Hydroelectric Plant blocks the Yenisei River at a place called Karlov Stvor. It makes use of the Yenisei River drop at the Sayany Corridor — a place where the Yenisei cuts through the ridges of the Western Sayan. It is about 280 kilometers long.
This is one of the most immense industrial constructions not only in Russia but in the whole world. The plant's dam is 242 meters high and more than a kilometer long. The Sayano–Shushenskaya Hydroelectric Plant became the upper plant of the Yenisei Hydroelectric Plant Cascade. It supplies electricity to Khakassia and adjacent regions.
The construction of the Sayano–Shushenskaya Hydroelectric Plant took nearly 30 years: it began in 1963 and continued until 1990. It was fully commissioned only in 2000. The building of this hydroelectric plant, the largest in Russia, used enough concrete to pave a highway from Saint-Petersburg to Vladivostok.
The Sayano–Shushenskaya Hydroelectric Plant is an absolute must-see for visitors to Khakassia. The plant looks most impressive at night, when it is illuminated.
