Umreva Dungeon is one of the main attractions of the Moshkovsky district, a federal architectural monument located on the banks of Ob river's Umrevinskya creek.
This location was chosen as the site for the dungeon because it was convenient to build a pier on the rocky bank of the Ob river's creek. The river here is deep enough that even when water levels are at their lowest, the bank does not get exposed. In addition the bank is rocky and is reinforced with massive granite and slate outcrops. For several centuries these stone outcrops attracted the attention of geologists.
Sergey Kolontsov, the chief archaeologist at the Center for Preserving the Historical and Cultural Heritage in the Novosibirsk regional administration, is the person who figured out the location of the first forticiations Russians constructed in Novosibirsk. Back in the late 1980s, Sergey Kolontsov began his search for the «lost» dungeon. The result was not obtained right away. A remark by the eldest Novosibirsk local historian Kuzma Zaitsev played an important role in identifying the location of the dungeon. Zaitsev believed that the dungeon should be sought at the Umreva river head and not near the village of the same name. And indeed on the left bank of the river, not far from a forester's house, on a plain «suitable place» as it had been written in the early 18th century, researchers managed to discover the earthen fortifications of the dungeon.
The dungeon was surveyed in 1992. In 1995, by the order of administration of Novosibirsk oblast, the territory of dungeon was given a special protective status.
Archaeological excavations in 2000-2004 enabled the discovery of well-preserved fortifications: a trench and a corner segment of a fence; ancient graves; household items including a «promissary» coin; remains of the dungeon wall pillars; and the foundation of one of the towers. On this foundation in 2003, a two-story tower with loopholes was rebuilt, and a memorial cross was erected and consecrated. In 2005, the chapel of Christ the Savior (The Savior of the Fiery Eye) was built and consecrated.
The dungeon hosts holidays and summer festivals dedicated to the popularization of craftsmanship reflected in the unity of history and culture. For example, Umreva Dungeon has been a venue for three consecutive years for the International Festival of Ceramists.
