Kuznetsky Alatau Reserve is located in Kemerovo Oblast, the most densely populated and industrialized region of trans-Ural Russia. Located on the western slope of the Kuznetsky Alatau Ridge, it accounts for about 5% of the area of Kuzbass. The main purpose of the reserve is the preservation of fresh water and air of Kuzbass, one of the most polluted industrial regions of Russia.
Ala-Tau means «motley mountains» in Turkic. A characteristic feature of this mountainous country is its flat and dome-like peaks, topped with various types of tundra, as well as kurums, stone spreadings remaining here from the glaciation era. The highest point of the ridge in the Reserve is Bolshoy Kanym Mountain (1872 m above sea level)
