Olkhon Island is the biggest island on Lake Baikal. It spreads along the west coast of the lake for 72 kilometers, and its width is 15 kilometers. It is part of Pribaikalsky National Park.
According to Buryatian folk tales, Olkhon Island is a wild and mystical place, and an active center of shamanism.
The most beautiful landscapes of Baikal combine on Olkhon in a remarkable manner: open steppe, light pine forests with relict pines, sandy beaches, and mountaintops. The island is rich in archaeological monuments, historical legends, and ancient myths. The most holy mythical places are considered Khoboy Cape, Deva Cliff (with a petrified wife of Buryatian shaman), the white marble cliffs of Sagan-Khushun, and the Zhima Mountain with a relict spruce forest.
The weather on Olkhon is usually sunny but windy in the mellow season, thus the air becomes Autumn-clean and clear. Boat, hiking and cycle tours are in high demand here, thanks to the favorable climate and perfect views.
