The Orenburg Shawl Gallary is dedicated to the almost 250-year history of the Orenburg shawl. Here it is also possible to learn the specific features, traditions, and future outlook of this craft.
The museum collection contains the products of Orenburg craftswomen. The first half of the 20th century is presented by just a few shawls. The creators of the shawls of this period are, as a rule, unknown. The shawl of the Butovsky family, dated to the beginning of the 20th century, is the oldest Orenburg shawl in the museum. It is remains the lightest shawl in the collection: it weighs just 40 grams.
The second half of the 20th century is presented in the museum the most completely. During this period, the Orenburg shawl remained tightly knitted. Today the shawl is expressly decorative.
The collection traces the general trajectories of the development of shawl knitting, but also highlights individual authors» manners and the specific features of the work of the leading craftswomen. The better part of the collection is presented by the work of the knitters of the village of Zhelty Saraktashsky district, which is considered to be the center of open-knitted shawls.
