The monument was established in 1998 in memory of Kirov citizens who fought in Afghanistan, Chechnya wars and in other local conflicts of the past decades. The opening of the monument took place four years later, on 29 June, 2002.
The sculptors of the heart-touching monument were Nikolay and Ludmila Ledentsovy. The couple, the Honoured artists of Russia, together with architect Viktor Kropachev designed the project and created the sculpture.
The stele behind the figure of a sorrowing soldier and two memorial stones on the sides have lists of names. 287 surnames of countrymen died in trouble spots during the fulfillment of duty are cut out on the stones and stele. Warriors from Kirov remain unforgotten.
