Kologriv is famous in Russia and other countries as the geese capital of Russia. The Kologrivskaya Poyma National Breeding Ground is the only place in our country where, in the spring, thousands of geese live practically within the borders of a town. It does not happen anywhere else in Russia. Every spring tens of thousands of birds stop here to rest before before continuing their migration to the Arctic. For a month they rest in the fields and meadows of the Unzha river valley. Usually cautious, the birds live very close to people.
According to the biologists, Kologriv is an important place for ornithology, since its allows them to follow the migratory routes of wild birds. The flood plain is the favorite place to rest not only for geese but also for other birds. Among them there are rare and endangered species. Since 2008, the Academy of Sciences has been banding the birds here.
The number of nature lovers who travel to Kologriv is growing every year. Such a huge assembly of geese is a unique attraction: there is no other place where you can watch so many wild birds from the distance of a couple of meters. In 2005 the first Geese Holiday was celebrated in Kologriv. It has become a tradition and takes place every year on the first Sunday in May.
