Sophia Valley is one of the most beautiful and popular tourist destinations in the Karachaevo-Cherkess Republic, and a symbol of Arkhyz. The most beautiful scenery in the valley is the view of Sofia Waterfall, at the headwaters of the Sophia River.
The source of the waterfall is the Sophia glacier. In July and August, when the mountain snows are melting most intensively, the view is most impressive. The seasonal variation of waterfall flows is called pulsing.
Streams of ice-cold water fall from a height of a hundred meters and divide into several waterfalls. The most powerful of them is the one that first greets tourists when they ascend from the rocky base of the Sophia River.
From the waterfalls, there is a beautiful view of the Sophia valley and surrounding mountain ranges. Along their way, tourists meet unmelted lumps of last year's snow.
