Khibiny is the largest mountain range of the northern Kola peninsula and its most beautiful decoration. Towering in the center of the peninsula, the mountains offer magnificent views in all directions. The highest point of the mountain system — Yudychvumchorr mountain — reaches 1200.5 meters above sea level. It is quite steep, with numerous inaccessible cliffs.
The Khibiny mountain range has plateau-like peaks, quite steep slopes, and deep gorges that attract tourists all year round. The slopes and valleys abound with intertwined hiking trails. Khibiny mountain range is one of the favorite tourist destinations: it is the first in the entire Arctic area where a proper system of trails was laid — from beginner to advanced. The peculiarities of the local climate often create extreme conditions for climbing.
For active recreation fans, the Khibiny ski resorts offer trails for all experience levels. This place is one of the few northern regions of Russia with developed traditions of hiking, cross-country skiing, and boating, as well as downhill skiing. The Khibiny mountain lakes are popular for picnics.
But Khibiny is not only wonderful scenery. Once this region was the home of an entire people. The Khibiny region abounds with legends and tales.
When hiking in the Khibiny in all seasons, it is important to monitor weather conditions, to avoid ascending in the fog, to wear appropriate shoes, and to have warm clothes, and ample supplies of food. In case of very long journeys, tourist vitamins would also be useful: due to low level of mineralization, Khibiny water washes the human body out of useful substances, which, however, in the short-term does not affect health.
