Shihan Tratau is a trapezoidal hill-remnant near the city of Sterlitamak. In Bashkir, «Tratau» means «mountain fortress». The mountain stands 406 meters above sea level and about 270 m above the Belaya River; it occupies 42 hectares. At the foothills lays Lake Tugarsalgan. Shihan Tratau is depicted on the emblem of the city of Ishimbai.
In 1965, Shihan Tratau was awarded the status of a complex natural monument. It is included in the preliminary Geological World Heritage List. However, you can visit Tratau for free; there is an alpine tourist route across well-developed trails.
Two more shihans tower near Tratau — Yuraktau and Kushtan. There was one more — Shahtau — but there is little left of it due to industrial development.
