In ancient times this area was called Ngmytarmah-Salle, which means «the land of ancestors». The Panaevskaya Tundra is home to cloudberries, cowberries, many varieties of mushrooms, and other berries. Its lakes and rivers are home to valuable northern species of fish — Siberian white salmon, whitefish, and broad whitefish. There are also plenty of waterfowl game birds. Reindeer breeding, however, still remains the locals» main occupation — they roam the tundra pastures with their herds. The municipal reindeer breeding facility «Panayevskoye» is one of the biggest not only in the autonomous okrug but in the world. A team of reindeer is the most popular means of transport in this area.
