The Saratov Road Bridge across the Volga River connects two cities: Saratov on the right bank and Engels on the left. The bridge's design is a multi-span arch made of reinforced concrete.
It was opened in 1965 and was Europe's longest bridge at that time. It stretches 2,825.8 m. It takes a pedestrian more than half a hour to cross it on foot. At times, Saratov and Engels residents do have to walk across the bridge. This is because in the middle of the Volga, there is a municipal beach on Pokrovskiye Peski Island. There is a path down to the beach fr om the bridge.
The bridge took 6 years to build. A film was shot during its construction, called «A Bridge is Being Built». The actors of Moscow's Sovremennik Theater, who wh ere on tour in Saratov, and the city's residents took part in the shooting. One of the main roles — a reporter arriving at the construction site — was played by Oleg Efremov. He also was one of the film's directors.
