This artificially planted forest was created in the beginning of the 20th century and it’s located on the northern outskirts of Rostov-on-Don. It appeared on a site of Shepkinskaya ravine where wild animals were bred, however in time the breeding household fell into disrepair and the only thing that was left is beautiful woodland. The variety of flora is astonishing! A curious observation — more than 70% of all trees and plants are artificially planted. In the eastern part of the forest you may find a marshy pond, in the south-east — a flooded quarry fit for swimming and also you may find a garbage pit. In the north you may find several clean ponds.
North-eastern part of the forest is dug with lots of strikeball bunkers. In the south-west, almost at the edge of Shekino, you may find the remains of old hamlets that are more than 100 years old, lots of paintball games are played here. Shepkinskiy forest is a home of different cross-country races, bike rides and role-playing games. On the outskirts of the forest runs one of the World War Second’s largest anti-tank ditches that were dug up for the protection of Rostov-On-Don.
You may fish, ride a quadrocycle and rest in a barbeque zone. Forest is inhabited by deers, foxes, hares, boars, pheasants, herons and wild ducks; waters are filled with fish and turtles along with lots of crawfish. Hunting in the forest is prohibited.
