The Museum of rare books was founded with the aim of preserving the literary monuments of culture and their scientific study and education of respect for the traditions of the world book culture. The Museum has about 15,000 units. These are books in Russian and foreign languages (mostly European) from the middle of the XVI — XX century until 1922, periodicals (domestic magazines of the XVIII — beginning of XX century). The funds were formed mainly from private collections.
After the restoration of the University, its library was replenished with books and magazines XVI — early XX century from the collections of Moscow and Saint Petersburg universities. The collection of the contemporary Museum made by the funds of the University Department of rare books.
A relatively large part of the exhibition hall is the exhibition «The History of books from the beginning of printing until 1917», which are books in Russian: old Slavonic and printed graphic print from the period of the kings Alexei Mikhailovich Romanov, Peter I, Empress Catherine II; rare editions of A.S. Pushkin, L.N. Tolstoy etc.
One of the distinguishing features of the Museum is the reading room for teachers, researchers, undergraduates, postgraduates and doctoral students. The staff of the Museum of rare book reveal, explore, and summarize the materials of monuments of the book culture stored in Museum funds.
