The monument is located not far from the rural settlement Smolenka in Chita district where in 1937-1938 the shot residents of Chita district sentenced to death were buried.
The exact number of the killed people is unknown, according to some research — about 8 thousand people.
On August 9, 1991 the bodies were reburied, and in the following year a monument was erected on the site of reburial: a cross of black stone with the inscription “To victims of political repressions” and a commemorative token in the form of three open-type semi-spheres. Relatives and friends of the killed people installed tens of personal commemorative signs on the territory of the memorial complex. In September 2008 the bishop of Chita and Zabaikalie Evstafiy and representatives of the clergy consecrated the memorial cross at the monument to victims of political repressions. Dirges are held every year on August 9 and October 30. The site of the burials has the status of a specially protected area.
