On the outskirts of the near-border village Gavan on the slope along the floodplain of the Kyra river there is a wonderful grove of hundreds of large elms. Thousands years ago this trees were characteristic plants of the broad-leaved forests; together with them oaks, lindens, and other species of trees and shrubs grew in groves; at present many of those species are completely extinct from Transbaikalia. Three species of elm-trees have survived in Zabaikalsky krai.Among the elm stands on the steppe slopes one can find such plants, as Indian madder, Haplophyllum davuricum, Daurian cymbaria, thyme dahuricus, chalk plant, spiraea aquilegifolia Pallas and spiraea pubescens Turcz. Also rare protected animals of Transbaikalia live there — e.g. steppe eagle and Daurian hedgehog.
