The synagogue was erected about the year 1880. The author of the first stone synagogue's project was the regional architect G.V. Nikitin but the final design was developed by the engineer Ya. Rodyukov. The money for constructing the stone synagogue was collected mainly from the auction sale of places in the future synagogue. In 1919-1922 many Jewish families left Chita and went mostly to Kharbin. Nevertheless, the synagogue was fulfilling all its functions — at least, up to 1930, and there are documentary evidences for that. In 1930, during the conflict with China, the synagogue was inhabited by the refugees from the south of the region. After that the building had many tenants; at present some private companies are situated in the building.
