If you walk up the Bauman street towards the main entrance of the Kazan Kremlin, you will see the National Museum of the Republic of Tatarstan on the opposite side of the street. The museum is located in the building of the former Gostiny Dvor (shopping arcade), the federal monument of history and culture.
The Republican National Museum, founded in 1894, is the oldest and leading museum center of Tatarstan, one of the largest cultural and historical museums in the Volga region.
Permanent exhibition is based on private collection of A.F. Likhachev, a well-known republican archaeologist, historian and collector, as well as exhibits of the 1890 scientific and industrial exhibition. Now the museum fund comprises of more than 910 thousand exhibits.
In addition to the largest archaeological fund, the museum has unique ethnographic and valuable numismatic collections, a collection of manuscripts and early printed books, a scriptural fund and personal archives of Tatar celebrities and artists.
The museum organizes thematic exhibitions and excursions: «Animated Exposition», «Ancient History of the Tatars», «Kazan Province in the XVIII Century», «Tatar Gold Rooms», «Magical Hands of Masters: folk handicrafts of Tatars» and others, master classes, holidays and activities for children and adults.
