A monument to the first cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin was opened on the 20th of April 2016 in Izhevsk in the area of the industrial building enterprise of Izhevsk Motorcycle factory «Axion-holding» from the side of Maxim Gorky Street.
The decision about monument installation was made due to the fact that on the 12th of April 2016 marked the 55th anniversary of the first manned space flight and taking into account the contribution of several generations of the plant workers to the development of domestic cosmonautics.
The monument in Izhevsk is an exact copy of the sculpture, made by Anatoly Novikov, established in 1984 in Lyubertsy. The author portrayed Gagarin in space suit walking with a smile in an orbit. Orbit is in the form of a band, encircling the globe. Its height is 3,65 meters.
Another copy of the monument was previously installed in London on the 14th of July 2011.
