The Udmurt Republic , Izhevsk

Monument to Yuri Gagarin

A monument to the first cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin  was opened on the  20th of  April 2016 in Izhevsk in the area  of the industrial building enterprise  of  Izhevsk Motorcycle factory  «Axion-holding» from the side of Maxim Gorky Street.

The decision about monument installation was made due to the  fact that on the 12th of  April  2016 marked the 55th anniversary of the first manned space flight  and taking into account the contribution of several generations of the plant workers to the development of domestic cosmonautics.

The monument in Izhevsk is an exact copy of the sculpture, made by Anatoly Novikov, established in 1984 in Lyubertsy. The author portrayed Gagarin in space suit walking with a smile in an orbit. Orbit is  in the form of a band, encircling the globe. Its height is 3,65 meters.

Another copy of the monument was previously installed in London on the 14th of  July 2011.
