Gostiny Dvor

All the ancient Russian towns have Gostiny Dvor (trading establishment), but none of them have architectural appearance like in Kaluga. Gostiny Dvor occupies a separate quarter and looks like a quadrangle. This shopping centre had been built for 40 years, and three gubernian architects participated in its construction. The first of them, Pyotr Nikitin, conceived the layout of the corps in a Gothic Style.

The construction ended in 1823. Such long construction may be explained by the fact that the works were funded by Kaluga merchants, who were not eager to spend their capitals on this. Fourteen corps of Gostiny Dvor are arranged in such a way that the area inside them forms a quadrangle yard – it was a place for trading from portable stalls.
