Samur – subtropical forest of Daghestan

Samur forest is unique woodland, where the most valuable objects of world significance are concentrated at the same time: relic forest, places of spawning of valuable kinds of fish, nestings of birds of passage and wintering birds, and the habitat of wild animals. On this territory in 1991 Samur state natural national park was organized. Samur forest is the last large woodland of relic liana forests in Russia. Over 1000 kinds of plants grow here, about 450 vertebrate and tens of thousands of invertebrate animals inhabit the forest, more than a hundred of them are threatened species and put into the Red books of Russia and Daghestan. Such plants are: nut-bearing lotus, Pterocarya pterocarpa, Nectaroscordum tripedale, Sternbergia lutea, Orchis simian and many others.

The vertebrates are: Caspian and Pontastacus leptodactylus, Bolivaria brachyptera, Calosoma sycophanta, Rhaesus (Rhesus) serricollis, Lucanus cervus, Utetheisa pulchella, Old World Swallowtail (Papilio machaon), Scarce Swallowtail (Iphiclides podalirius). Rare and guarded kinds of mammals are: western barbastelle (Barbastella barbastellus), Bechstein's bat (Myotis bechsteinii), Caucasian otter, jungle cat, forest cat. Rare birds which nest there: White-tailed Eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) and Purple Swamphen (Porphyrio porphyrio) and in overflights Dalmatian pelican (Pelecanus crispus), Glossy ibis (Plegadis falcinellus), Eurasian spoonbill (Plateinae), flamingo, Lesser white-fronted goose (Anser erythropus), Peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus), short-toed snake eagle (Circaetus gallicus), Black-winged pratincole (Glareola nordmanni) and Collared pratincole (Glareola pratincola), and many other kinds are met.

At the seaside part one can see Mediterranean turtle, whip snake (Dolichophis schmidti) and Pelobates syriacus (Pelobates syriacus). On the Samur there are 68 kinds of trees and bushes, over 16 kinds of Mediterranean lianas, making the forest exotic and impenetrable in some places.
