Daghestan museum of visual arts of P.S. Gamzatova was opened in 1958. The basis of museum collection is made of 200 exhibits, which were passed from art department of Local-history museum, now Daghestan state united museum of A. Takho-Godi (pictures, drawings, sculptures, china, furniture), got in 1920-1930s from the State museum fund.
At present the collection of Daghestan museum of visual arts of P.S. Gamzatova includes the most diverse collections numbering more than 14 thousand exhibits. Permanent exposition of the museum is placed in nine halls and consists of the following departments: Russian art of XVIII – the beginning of XX centuries. Russian painters of XIX – the beginning of XX centuries in the Caucasus. West European art of XVI – the beginning of XX centuries. Decorative and applied arts of Daghestan. Decorative silver of the end of XVIII- the beginning of XX centuries.
Aside from the permanent exposition in the museum, theme and personal exhibitions are constantly held, and also creative projects of modern Daghestanian artists are realized. Meetings with the leading specialists in the area of culture are held, general programs of series “Walks in museum” are filmed, and there are special excursions for students and schoolchildren. Activities in the sphere of scientific publishing are held, only in the last years the museum has published about 60 editions. 50 exhibitions were held, not including numerous travelling exhibitions across the republic. Thus, Daghestan museum of visual arts deservedly has the status of the republican cultural center.
