One of the main architectural sightseeings of the city is the Derbent Wall, with length over 3500 meters. This double wall existing since the times of Sassanids, begins at the fortress Narin-kala, and ends in the waters of the Caspian sea.

Northern and southern walls are parallel to each other at the distance of 300-400 meters. Along the wall on all its length practically at the same distance from one another, 73 towers were established. All of them are built of dark unburnt brick. Unfortunately only 46 towers remained to our days. The gates of the Sassanids times are of interesting architectural decision. Out of 14 original gates only 9 remained: 3 – in the northern wall, 4 – in the southern wall, 2- in the fortress.

The Derbent Wall is the monument of ancient Persian art of building; it is included into the list of Worldwide heritage of UNESCO. The Derbent Wall was used for defensive purposes for more than 15 centuries during the invasions of Arabs, Mongols and Persians. The historians still don’t know the exact quantity of confrontations that it had to endure.
