Kasimov is situated in the center of the Meshchrskaya lowland, on the left bank of the river Oka, which forms a steep slope whose height in the historical part of the town reaches 42 m.

The town was founded by Suzdal prince Yury Dolgoruky in 1152 under the name Gorodets Meshchersky. Initially the town served as a fortress protecting the borders of the Vladimir-Suzdal Principality. Fr om 1376 to 1471 the town was called Novy Nizovoi.

The period from the middle of the 15th century and almost till the end of the 17th century is a special epoch in Kasimov's history. In 1452 Moscow prince Vasily II the Blind entrusted the town to Kasim Khan, who had fled from Kazan. Khan faithfully served the Russian state and for that in 1471 the town was renamed in his honor.  The Kasimovskoe Tatar Khanate was formed in Meshchersky krai and the town Kasimov became its capital. Tatars from Crimea, Kazan, and other places began to come to the Khanate. Directly dependent on Grand Prince of Moscow, the Kasimov Khanate existed for over 200 years.

Within this period two cultures — the Russian and Tatar — closely intertwined. The town exterior and its vicinities have changed. In Kasimov, one can see a mosque next to an Orthodox church, hear both the Russian and Tatar languages, and see how the traditions of two peoples organically blend into the everyday life of the modern town.

Currently Kasimov is a very interesting place for the travelers. Situated in the house of the Alyanchikovs (a merchant house from the 19th century), the local history museum is one of the oldest in Ryazan oblast. It holds a collection of over 40,000 items.  The collection of over 300 samovars (at some point of history it was an obligatory household attribute) is another part of the museum in Kasimov.

The town is famous for its architecture. Constructed in the 15th century, one of the oldest mosques in Russia is in Kasimov. The town also has merchant buildings, rows, and mansions from the 19th century, and Cathedral Square, whose ensemble includes the Cathedral of the Ascension and the Church of the Annunciation.

Another place wh ere it is possible to feel the spirit of an old provincial town is along Embankment Street, whose houses at one time belonged to the town's wealthy residents.  Among the buildings there are the federal memorials, including the house of the Barkovs, which in the 19th century was the center of social life of Kasimov.

It is possible to get to Kasimov by car along the highways Р105 and Р124. There is also the regular long haul bus service between Kasimov and Moscow, Ryazan, Sasovo, Murom, and other cities. When rivers are navigable from May to September, a passenger quay is placed on the embankment and accepts passenger steamboats going to/from Moscow (Yuzhny Port) and between Nizhny Novgorod and Ryazan.
